HORRIFIC

Pastor Rebert3 PicParkland, Fla. – A former student opened fire at a Florida high school Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and sending scores of students fleeing into the streets in the nations deadliest school shooting since a gunman attacked an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
On the cover of the Detroit News, that day was, a picture of a mother holding a grieving girl in her arms.   The mother has tears rolling down her closed eyes.   On her forehead were ashes in the sign of the cross.   It was a present-day tragedy on Ash Wednesday.

Grief and tragedy, murders and bombing can happen on any day and at any place.   Ultimately there is only one place for comfort and healing.   It is in the soul.

A hymn which comforted many a soul which was heard as the Titanic sank to churches singing it after 9/11 is a hymn by Isaac Watts – O God, Our Help in Ages Past.   The first and final verses read:

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home.
O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Still be our guard while troubles last And our eternal home.

The hymn was based on Psalm 90 which scholars say is a prayer of Moses.   Moses knew his fair share of troubles yet remained steadfast with God.   At the end of his horrific life, he pleaded but for one thing: “Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us.”  v. 17.   This plead is a prayer we all need each day.
