Nine Lessons from My Father
To not make the cut for a sports team is a sad day in one’s life. It is a tragic day if your Dad is a superstar of a professional team. But one of the best days in Murray’s life was when he was booted from the University of Michigan hockey team and was greeted with unconditional love by his father, Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe.
Now a Sports Medicine Doctor at the University of Toledo Medical Center, Murray recently wrote a book Nine Lessons I Learned from My Father. Briefly, the points are:
1. Live Honorably – “People depend on you to do the right thing.”
2. Live Generously – “What good is money except to do something nice for somebody.”
3. Play Hard, but Have Fun – “If it’s not fun, do something else.”
4. Patience, Patience, Patience – “Take your time and do it right.”
5. Live Selflessly – “If you want a good workout, grab that shovel over there.”
6. Be Humble – “Don’t read your own press clippings. You’ll start to believe them.”
7. Be Tough – There’s no such thing as cold weather. Only cold clothing.”
8. Stay Positive – “I never keep track of my shots that miss.”
9. Friends and Family Are Like Gold- Treasure Them – “Never forget where you came from, or who got you there.”
With the season of Lent fast approach many people like to endeavor to give up something. Maybe a more meaningful approach is to actively do something Christ-like every day “Be Humble or Live Honorably or Stay Positive.”
Paul had this goal in mind when he stated: ” Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.”
