Augsburg Lutheran Church (shown above circa 1947) will celebrate its 100th anniversary with special events on Saturday February 22 and Sunday February 23  Augsburg English Evangelical Lutheran Church Mission formed on February 22, 1914, and met above a meat market at the corner of Sylvania and Lewis Avenues. In 1916, a wooden chapel was constructed at church’s current location, the corner of Sylvania Avenue and Rollins Road. The new structure was dedicated in 1922, and was subsequently expanded in 1947, 1958 and 1960. In 1947, the church added a massive 1927 Aeolian pipe organ.

Tragedy struck in May of 2005, when a fire devasted the sanctuary. The space was renovated, the organ repaired, and the original stain glass windows restored (shown right). The space was rededicated on December 10, 2006.

The congregation and guests will enjoy a catered dinner the evening of Saturday February 22. RSVPs are required, and more information about tickets is available through the church office at (419) 478-2374.

On Sunday February 23, a special worship service is planned for 10:30am. All of the congregation’s former pastors have been invited to attend.

Nearby Bethany Lutheran and Reformation Lutheran Churches will be closing that day in observation, as well as participating in the music program at Augsburg. Tours of the building will be available after the service. The public is welcome.

Augsburg Lutheran Church is located at 1342 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, OH.
