Now, these three remain faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:13

Mother’s Day was last Sunday. It was a precious and blessed day to grasp the depth and wonder of a Mother’s love. Her compassion is astonishing and perplexing. Her actions of long ago can and often will last a lifetime. A recent column about Paul McCartney highlights this love between a mother and her son.

Paul McCartney wrote “Let It Be” after an epiphany. Completely lost, depressed, and lonely he was longing for the comfort of his mother. Her name was Mary, and she had died when he was only 14. McCartney admits that he was wandering about in his mind, under the influence of God knows what, somewhere between insomnia and sleep, when his mother came to him in a dream.

“My mother appeared, and there was her face, completely clear, particularly her eyes, and she said to me very gently, very reassuringly: ‘Paul, let it be.’ She had visited me at this very difficult point in my life and gave me this message. Be gentle, don’t fight things, just try and go with the flow and it will all work out.”

Waking up inspired, McCartney went straight to his piano and began writing the now classic song, ringing with the assurance, “There will be an answer, let it be…Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.” It is a confession of surrender. Not apathy, indifference, or hopelessness, but a song of complete submission and trust.

HORRIFIC

Parkland, Fla. – A former student opened fire at a Florida high school Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and sending scores of students fleeing into the streets in the nations deadliest school shooting since a gunman attacked an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

On the cover of the Detroit News, that day was, a picture of a mother holding a grieving girl in her arms. The mother has tears rolling down her closed eyes. On her forehead were ashes in the sign of the cross. It was a present-day tragedy on Ash Wednesday.

Grief and tragedy, murders and bombing can happen on any day and at any place. Ultimately there is only one place for comfort and healing. It is in the soul.

People are lining up a bakeries libakerieske’s in Sylvania, Ohio. It is Fat Tuesday and people can not get enough of their Paczki, all 425 calories and 25 grams of fat. Tomorrow, Ash Wednesday, a hard-boiled egg may be on the breakfast table, all 78 calories to fill one’s hunger pains.

Nine Lessons from My Father

To not make the cut for a sports team is a sad day in one’s life. It is a tragic day if your Dad is a superstar of a professional team. But one of the best days in Murray’s life was when he was booted from the University of Michigan hockey team and was greeted with unconditional love by his father, Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe.
