Library Plant Exchange
April 28The Wood County Plant Exchange begins at 9 a.m. with plant drop off at the Wood County Fairgrounds. Bring labeled, weed-free plants and gently used gardening paraphernalia. At 10, the “give-away” area opens and continues until plants are gone, usually about 10:45. Everyone gets three free items; people who bring plants receive more. Informational booths and expert advice for the asking. The fairgrounds are at Haskins and Poe roads in Bowling Green. Organized by OSU Extension Wood County Master Gardener Volunteers. The Toledo Plant Exchange, in its 14th year, begins with plant drop-off from 8:30 to 10 in the parking garage of Main Library downtown. Bring labeled, weed-free plants and gently used gardening paraphernalia. There will be informational booths and experts to answer questions. Plant giveaway begins at 10 and continues until about 10:45. Attendees will receive five free plants, while those who bring items to share will receive more. Enter the garage from Adams off of 11th street, and drive to the garage’s far end. It’s a collaboration of the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, OSU Extension Lucas County Master Gardener Volunteers, and community gardeners. FREE. Facebook and 419-578-6783.

In the fairy tale, “The Sleeping Beauty”, the heroine is saved from seemingly endless sleep by a kiss from the handsome prince, who whisks her away to his palace where they live happily ever after. This same idea is portrayed in “Snow White” and in countless other stories. Even in our modern times, many films and novels continue to follow a similar plot concept.The majority of us grow up believing the false information given to us by television, radio, film and the printed word that something or someone can rescue us from our mundane lives and turn us into all that we want to be. Even our parents give us the impression that the right person will make everything just fine. Young women dress up like fairy princesses in white lacy dresses on their wedding day, propagating this myth even further.

Helping Human Trafficking Victims in Toledo
The Salvation Army’s RISE program
Toledo, OH (March 28, 2018) – RISE (Recovering Individuals from Sexual Exploitation) is a Salvation Army program here in Toledo that works to improve the physical, emotional and spiritual life of those who have experienced human trafficking. This is accomplished through comprehensive case management, and a variety of weekly events including a support group, women’s AA meeting, Zumba and drop in hours. RISE was started in 2015 to help address gaps in services for trafficking victims. When asked what makes RISE different from other programs for human trafficking victims Marchon Noon, the program coordinator, said “Our case management system has grown and expanded based on what we are learning. We are able to adapt to the needs of the client and meet them where they are.” Continue reading
