The pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, Perrysburg, recently spoke about how Christians are called to serve others. She said that every Christian is considered a “call”-unteer and elaborated as follows:

1) We were Created to serve. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

2) We are Called to serve. “And you are also among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.” Romans 1:6
“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called.” Ephesians 4:4

3) We are Commanded to serve. “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13 Continue reading »

The Power of Gratitude to Make a Difference in the World

SONY DSCHappiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.  Norman MacEwan
We are inspired by people who use their bounty and their spirit of thankfulness to reach out and help others. It doesn’t matter what our circumstances are, there is no better way to rise above our circumstances than to volunteer to help in our church, a charitable organization, mentor someone, or give counsel and support to someone who needs us. Our thankfulness can manifest itself in our actions and in our deeds, in the choice to share our gifts and abundance with those who need it most. And evidence suggests that helping others may be as important to our physical well-being as regular exercise and proper nutrition.

Words of Faith

Pastor Rebert3 PicNow, these three remain faith, hope, and love.   But the greatest of these is love.   I Corinthians 13:13
Mother’s Day was last Sunday.  It was a precious and blessed day to grasp the depth and wonder of a Mother’s love.   Her compassion is astonishing and perplexing.   Her actions of long ago can and often will last a lifetime.   A recent column about Paul McCartney highlights this love between a mother and her son.

Paul McCartney wrote “Let It Be” after an epiphany.   Completely lost, depressed, and lonely he was longing for the comfort of his mother.   Her name was Mary, and she had died when he was only 14.   McCartney admits that he was wandering about in his mind, under the influence of God knows what, somewhere between insomnia and sleep, when his mother came to him in a dream.
“My mother appeared, and there was her face, completely clear, particularly her eyes, and she said to me very gently, very reassuringly: ‘Paul, let it be.’    She had visited me at this very difficult point in my life and gave me this message.  Be gentle, don’t fight things, just try and go with the flow and it will all work out.”
Waking up inspired, McCartney went straight to his piano and began writing the now classic song, ringing with the assurance, “There will be an answer, let it be…Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.” It is a confession of surrender.   Not apathy, indifference, or hopelessness, but a song of complete submission and trust.

Pray for the Nations

DoveCrossDear Fellow Disciples,

In Acts 1:8 we read: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Two things about this verse:

1. The commission given to the early church is only in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is not something we can accomplish on our own.

2. This commission is for each one of us and extends to the ends of the earth, to people of every tribe, nation and language. Continue reading »
