ChurchClipartJanuary 6 Worship: Epiphany/Communion Scriptures: Psalm 72:1-7; Ephesians 3:1-12; Matthew 2:1-12 Sermon: “Following the Star” The term “epiphany” comes from the Greek meaning “appear, reveal, shine, give light.” Starlight led the magi to discover the birth of a new hope, a gift to the world, a baby who would himself be called “the light of the world.” By what means can we follow the pointing to where Jesus can be found in our lives today?

January 13 Worship: Baptism of Our Lord/Christian Unity Scriptures: Isaiah 43:1-7; Psalm 29; Acts 8:14-17; Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 We join our friends from St. Paul Lutheran Church in their House of Worship. Diversity is a messy thing. Why can’t everyone just believe the exact way that we believe? What can we gain from concentrating on what unites us, as opposed to what divides us?

January 20 Worship: 2nd Sunday After Epiphany Scriptures: Isaiah 62:1-5; Psalm 36:5-10; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11; John 2:1-11 Sermon: “Surprising Signs” Sometimes we fall prey to the tendency to see God’s activity in predictable places. We forget that scripture show us, again and again, that God acts in unexpected ways. Our scriptures today remind us to stay open to the new places and new ways that God’s work is revealed. We must take notice of God’s surprising activity in the world. Continue reading »

Welcome to another beautiful day in the neighborhood.

SONY DSCIt’s beautiful because you’re my neighbor and your part of it. I got something in my email a few years ago that I saved, because it said so much to me, I may have shared it with you before, but I want to share it again with you. It’s perfect for this time, because it reveals to us just how easy it is to love, just how easy it is to be an individual savior in a world that’s begging to be saved, person by person, moment by moment. It’s another case where adults can learn from children.

How Many Minutes a Day Does it Take to Read the Bible in a Year?

PastorMattMustericDear Fellow Disciples,

Last year was a year of prayer. 2019 will be a year of Scripture. As part of this year of Scripture, there is one simple goal:

For 70 (or more) members and friends of Bethlehem to develop the habit of reading and reflecting on Scripture daily.

Habits are a challenge to develop. Those who study the science of habit formation used to say it that it takes 21 days to develop a new habit. The truth is that it’s closer to 66 days. In 2019, let’s commit to a developing (or continuing) a habit of daily Bible reading. Continue reading »

An Advent Story   “For nothing is impossible with God”  Luke 137

Pastor Rebert2 Pic The Holiday Season is full of delightful stories of good winning over evil,   Stories and books like……..A Christmas Carol; How The Grinch Stole Christmas; The Night Before Christmas and many others. In a new Advent book, “Sum: Forty Tales From The Afterlives,” David Eagleman imagines what might happen after we die and the chance to choose one’s next life.   One person who desires simplicity chooses to come back as a horse!   Why not?   Grazing green pastures, frolicking over the hillsides, running across the plains with not a care in the world; and doing all of this as a big, literal stud.   His decision is made, God speaks, and the transformation begins.

Suddenly “a mat of strong hair erupts to cover you like a blanket…your neck thickens… your fingers blend hoofward.   Your concerns about human affairs begin to slip away…But the more you become like a horse you forget what it is like to be human.   You realize that, with your thick horse brain, you won’t have the capacity to ask to be you again.   Your choice to slide down the intelligence ladder is irreversible.”
What does this have to do with Advent.   Think about it for a moment.   In Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, a magnificent, extraterrestrial creature chose to become human.
Thus, Christmas is an event of descent, a movement downward mobility, with heaven’s Son plummeting to planet earth, fusing these worlds together in a wondrous, inexplicable mystery.
The King of kings, and Lord of lords met humanity on its own terms, with the author stating at the end: “what we are that we might become what God is.”
